What are BFRBs?
Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors aren’t just “bad habits”; they are complex and often misunderstood conditions. They might make you feel isolated, embarrassed, frustrated, and ashamed, especially if you have tried to stop with no success. They are known as self-grooming behaviors that can unintentionally cause harm. You may find yourself fully aware of engaging in these behaviors, but other times, you may have not even realized you were doing them. Some of these behaviors include but are not limited to skin-picking, nail biting, or hair-pulling etc. It could feel incredibly difficult to stop these behaviors due to the strong urge and rewarding experience that comes from it.
Excoriation Disorder
Excoriation Disorder, also known as, skin picking disorder, can happen anywhere on the body. Some examples are picking at pimples, cuticles, scabs, or picking at lips. You may find yourself skin picking with your hands or having to use tweezers and a mirror. The damage to the skin may be noticeable and cause you distress as you feel you have to cover these areas with makeup or clothing.
Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania, also known as, hair pulling disorder, can occur wherever we have hair on our bodies. Some common hair puling sites are eyelashes, scalp, eyebrows, and genitals. Some individuals may even find themselves ingesting the hair they have pulled out.
Other Common BFRBs
BFRB’s are not limited to only skin picking and hair pulling and can include:
- Cheek biting
- Nail biting
- Nose picking
- Lip biting
Common Experiences:
- Hiding bald spots or scabs with hats, makeup, or clothing
- Skipping class or work after a picking or pulling episode that has caused visible damage
- Not realizing you were engaging in picking or pulling while sitting in class or a meeting
- Constantly worrying that someone will notice and call you out
- Struggling to concentrate due to the strong urges to pick and pull
- Experiencing shame when comparing yourself to others
- Have a diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or an anxiety disorder
