What is ERP?
Exposure and Response Prevention is known as the gold standard treatment for OCD. It helps you face your fears in a gradual manner. Exposure means facing the thoughts, sensations, emotions, and situations that you fear without avoiding them (avoidance fuels the OCD cycle!). The response prevention portion helps you reduce compulsions so over time you learn that you no longer need to rely on rituals and that you have the power to resist your urges. ERP helps us adopt a new mindset which is to be able to accept the uncertainty that surrounds our lives while still being present.
Think of ERP for OCD as personalized strategy where we will map out your OCD patterns and design a plan tailored just for you. The goal is to identify what your core fear is. Next, it will consist of engaging in gradual exposures; we will start small, build some confidence, and work up to bigger challenges. Along the way, there will be skill building that will help you manage anxiety and resist compulsions. Below is a glimpse into the different types of exposures.
- In Vivo Exposures: are “live” exposures that you can physically encounter. For instance, they could be places, situations, people, or objects.
- Imaginal Exposures: are meant to be used when the situations you fear can’t be replicated. For imaginal exposures we write scripts of your worst fears and practice reading them out loud.
- Interoceptive Exposures: are exercises that are meant to purposely elicit physical sensations that you fear.
All exposures will be tailored and I take a proactive approach in sessions and guide you along the way.
