Therapy for OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a chronic condition that consists of intrusive and intimidating thoughts identified as obsessions. People who have OCD may perform compulsions or “rituals” that can range from behaviors like rechecking the locks repeatedly to mental processes like counting phrases or repeating numbers, as a way to manage the anxiety it causes. Obsessions and compulsions vary greatly from person to person.

Treatment:

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP): is the #1 treatment for OCD. ERP helps you learn how to safely and gradually confront your triggers. In the long run, you will feel confident and be able to resist performing rituals.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): teaches you mindfulness-based skills in order to be present in the moment and how to identify and connect with your values in order for you to live a meaningful life. ACT is particularly helpful for those who feel that OCD has taken over their lives and has caused them to lose sight of who they once were.
